OEMs can be a lot of fun. Taiwan’s world leader in smartphones, HTC, plays it both ways as an OEM to many mobile phone brands in the Windows platform while offering some of those same models directly to consumers under its own name. When Google finally jumped into the mobile phone business with its first Nexus One smartphone running its own Android 2.1 Éclair, HTC was more than happy to dump its eagerly anticipated HTC Passion to have it rebranded as the Nexus One. That same HTC Passion had also circulated in the online rumor mill as the HTC Bravo and guess what, it has morphed with little changes as the HTC Desire that went out last month and can be had for free with a Orange Dolphin 25 plan with 500 MB internet surfing for just â,¤25/month.
A Better Nexus One
From a distance, it’s the Nexus One with some buttons below the screen and an optical trackpad. Up close and turned on, you know it’s an HTC with its Sense UI on top of the Android 2.1 Éclair OS powered by the same 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon that powers the Nexus One. A lot of smartphone pundits unabashedly call it the Nexus One with Sense, referring to its use of HTC’s Sense UI. Is that good or bad? Anyone who has ever used the Nexus One would confirm it’s good, at least for HTC.
Afterall, the Nexus One is without doubt the best thing that ever happened to Android. But because it has a better user interface in the Sense, it’s not good for Google. With all things equal which is essentially the case here, one can easily compare how much better it is to use the HTC Desire with its Sense UI than the Nexus without it.
Head to Head
Technically, the two are nearly identical twins. Apart from running the same OS powered by the same processors, they both sport the same superb 3.7-inch Wide-VGA display with 16 million colors and using AMOLED capacitive touchscreens with multitouch input technologies. You also have the same accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensors. Imaging is served with the same 5 megapixel autofocus shooter with LED Flash, geo tagging and high definition D1 (720 x 480) video capture. Both come with the same monoblock form similarly styled but with the Desire getting a 0.4mm slimmer but 5g heavier.
Both are 3G phones on the dual band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA but distinguished by their frequencies. The Desire has 900/2100 frequencies meant for Asian and European markets while the Nexus has that as well as 850/1900 for US markets. That means the US markets can’t use the HTC except on 2G while the Nexus One can be imported to Europe for 2G/3G. It’s also a quad band GSM radio on 2G with class EDGE/GPRS data speeds.
But handsets have WiFi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP, GPS and FM stereo receivers as well as 3.5mm headphone jack. Battery life is a curiosity as the HTC Desire gets a significantly shorter talk time of 6.6 hours while the Nexus gets 10 hours from the same 1400 mAh Li-Ion battery.
Standby time shows a reversal with the HTC getting a more generous 340 hours and just 290 hours on the Nexus. The main difference really lies on the Desire using the latest Sense UI with pundits pointing out how much better it looks and easier to use than the Nexus One.

HIPHONE, the latest IPHONE clone from china, you probably know
it or you probably own it. HIPHONE is an imported cell phone, normally you bought
